Topeka, Kan. – ACT, the organization known widely for administering the college readiness exam, has selected Dr. Alan Bearman as the 2019 Kansas ACT College and Career Readiness Postsecondary Champion. Bearman is a professor of history and the dean of university libraries & the center for student success and retention at Washburn University.
The ACT College and Career Readiness Champions are individuals across the country who support ACT’s mission of education and workplace success. According to the ACT, preparing individuals for college and career success is no small task – and it has never been more important. ACT recognizes individuals who make a positive impact on their communities through their efforts to advance college and career readiness.
“Dr. Bearman is a vocal advocate for our students – from helping establish programs and partnerships to assist first generation college students, to ensuring students have the resources they need for success on their journey to graduation,” said Dr. JuliAnn Mazachek, vice president for academic affairs. “He truly lives the ACT’s mission to advance students.”
Bearman joined the Washburn University faculty in 2003 and became the dean of libraries in 2008. During his time on campus, he has led efforts to revitalize the university libraries, helped establish the minor in information literacy, and helped create several initiatives focused on student achievement, including the center for student success and retention, the First-Year Experience program, the Ichabod Success program and the Peer Education program.
“I was the first person in my family to go to college and understand that navigating higher education can be difficult,” said Bearman. “I want to do everything possible to give our students the tools to help them become their best selves. From their first visit to campus, I want each student to know that the Washburn community is here to support them.”
Bearman is a native of London, England, who many years ago moved to the U.S. as a high school student. Upon graduating high school in Madisonville, Ky., Bearman graduate with a Bachelor of Science in psychology from the University of Kentucky, a Bachelor of Arts and a master’s degree in history from Murray State University and he earned a doctorate in history from Kansas State University.
