"Washburn is considered the ‘Gem on Jewell’ in our family. The university has offered us some incredible educational experiences, right here in our hometown."

The Fry family, of Topeka, will be recognized as the 2014 Washburn University Family of the Year on Saturday, Sept. 20. They will be honored during halftime Family Day celebration at the Washburn football game against Pittsburg State University.

The mother/daughter duo, Anita Fry and Meredith Fry, both currently enrolled at Washburn, nominated their family for this award because in 2014, four of the five Fry family members have been enrolled and attending classes at Washburn. Anita and Meredith said, “Washburn is considered the ‘Gem on Jewell’ in our family. The university has offered us some incredible educational experiences, right here in our hometown.”

Anita is currently working on a master’s in health science. Meredith graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in biology from Washburn and is currently in her third year at Washburn School of Law. Steve Fry, Anita’s husband and Meredith’s father, received his certificate in legal studies in May and Kristina Fry, daughter-in-law, is in her final semester in the master’s of business administration program. The only family member not enrolled at Washburn is Andy Fry, son and brother and an engineer, but Anita and Meredith report they are working on him.

For years, the Fry family has attended many Washburn functions and activities. They have attended theatre and music performances, art shows, athletic events and lectures. In addition, when the Fry children were younger, they attended art classes and computer camp. Kristina and Meredith have been involved in student organizations and currently Meredith is an officer in the Women’s Legal Forum.

For the past seven years, the Fry family members also have maintained Ichabod’s Prairie Patch, a native plant garden on the south side of the Art Building. Meredith planned and raised funds for the garden as part of an eco-art class during her freshman year as part of her Washburn Transformational Experience project. The family helped plant all the plants, along with some of Meredith’s classmates, and they continue to maintain it.

Anita and Meredith wrote the following when nominating their family for this recognition, “Our family is not your traditional family applicant. We have multiple members currently engaged in Washburn’s programs and we represent lifelong learning – from traditional classroom to online programs, undergraduate studies through graduate level programs and certificate programs. We believe we represent many opportunities that Washburn provides to learners of today and in the future… Washburn has been and will continue to be a thriving hub that connects the many spokes in our community.”

The Fry family received tickets to the Family Day picnic and football game. They also received a $200 gift certificate for the Ichabod Shop, a plaque and a framed picture from the Family Day festivities.
