11/26/13 07:11 am CST
"It’s a way to put our hands where our hearts are and make sure that all kids have something special under the tree this holiday season."

Washburn Tech is turning into Santa’s Workshop to make toys for children in need this holiday season. Washburn Tech Student Government Association is hosting a Toys for Tots Build Day beginning at 8:00 a.m., Saturday, December 7, in the Cabinet and Mill lab in Building L at 5724 S.W. Huntoon.

Students, technical instructors and volunteers plan to make 400 toys consisting of wooden step stools, wooden beat box drums with drum sticks and hobby horses. Members of the Boy Scouts of America Jayhawk Area Council will help make the toys and earn their woodworking and community services badges in the process

“This is a win-win project for our students, staff, Boy Scouts and the community,” said Johnny Lemon, cabinet/mill technical instructor and Washburn Tech Student Government Association co-sponsor. “It’s a way to put our hands where our hearts are and make sure that all kids have something special under the tree this holiday season.”
