Superior math skills added up to a national award for Tanya Twombly, a 2013 graduate of Washburn Tech’s Practical Nursing program. The Delia resident won a silver medal at this year’s SkillsUSA Championships held on June 27th in Kansas City, Missouri.

Twombly finished second in the Medical Math competition, in which contestants demonstrate their knowledge of general math concepts used in the health care field. It’s among 98 SkillsUSA competitions that test work skills in the trade, technical, and leadership fields.

Nearly 6,000 high school and post-secondary students take part in the national competition every year. They work against the clock and each other, proving their expertise in occupations like electronics, computer-aided drafting, precision machining, medical assisting, culinary arts, and more. All contestants win at the state level before moving on to national competition.

The championships are part of the annual SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference, a week-long event that unites more than 15,000 students, teachers, and business partners.
