Making people feel good about themselves is what drew Kendra Gatzemeyer to the field of cosmetology. And, it is that philosophy that drew the attention of a local scholarship committee which has awarded the Washburn Tech student a $500 Great Clips Scholarship.
Gatzemeyer, of Valley Falls, is a student at the Washburn Tech Academy of Cosmetology which opened in Topeka last fall. She values the opportunity to utilize her artistic side, and is working three jobs to pay for her education. She hopes to have no debt upon graduation and says this scholarship will help to make that possible.
“I love waking up and going to school every day. Not very many people can say that,” said Gatzemeyer. “I have found what I truly love to do and I cannot wait to see what my future holds.”
The Great Clips Scholarship is awarded annually to area students who have a passion for the industry and express solid career goals. After talking to Washburn Tech instructors and reading Gatzemeyer’s application, Great Clips owner Mark Fisher said she was a terrific choice.
“Kendra’s work ethic is very impressive. Out of the 20 applications we received, her words really made an impression on our committee. In particular, we appreciate her passion for making people feel good about themselves. That is what this industry is all about,” said Fisher.
Short-term goals for Gatzemeyer include graduating from the Washburn Tech Academy of Cosmetology, passing her state board test and landing a job. Her long-term goals include exploring the different avenues of the cosmetology industry and meeting inspiring people.
“I could see myself working for a corporation, opening my own salon or even doing photography hair and make-up,” Gatzemeyer said. “There are so many different things that you can do in this industry and I cannot seem to set my mind on just one of them.”
