Toys for Tots annual Toy Build Work Day set by Washburn Tech

12/06/18 12:12 pm CST

Give Santa’s elves a helping hand at the Toy Build Work Day to benefit Toys for Tots set from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7 in Building K at Washburn University Institute of Technology (Washburn Tech), 5724 SW Huntoon St.

Volunteers are welcome to assist in assembling items that will be donated to Toys for Tots. Projects will include homemade wooden step stools, hobby horses, beat boxes and yoyos.

The event involves students, instructors and volunteers from the community who make homemade toys for local children in need. This annual event is sponsored by Washburn Tech’s Student Advisory Board and SkillsUSA Chapter.

In 2017, workers at the Toy Build produced 1,250 items that were distributed in 12 counties in northeast Kansas. Coordinator of the project, John Lemon, cabinet and millwork instructor, noted the range of talents and dedication of the teams of volunteers. His list includes:

  • Students in the cabinet and millwork program “who worked tirelessly” to cut and manufacture 3,800 parts
  • Building technology students who cut 1,300 parts to length
  • Graphics technology students who made promotional materials
  • Countless donations of money and materials required to begin the cutting, sanding, gluing and painting

This year, the workforce will include employees from Azura Credit Union, Mars, Topeka Metro and Lowes, in addition to students representing the Shawnee Heights High School National Honor Society, Osage City High School Student Council and Free State High School Gifted Program.
