Recycled Rides Revs Up for Rideaway

04/24/19 11:04 am CDT
"State Farm is proud to be a long-time supporter of Washburn Tech and their Recycled Rides program"

Washburn Tech’s Recycled Rides program will hand over the keys to a brighter future at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 30, in Building K on the Washburn Tech campus at 5724 SW Huntoon St. Two refurbished vehicles will be presented to local families or organizations in need. In addition, a donation from State Farm Insurance will be presented.

“State Farm is proud to be a long-time supporter of Washburn Tech and their Recycled Rides program,” said State Farm spokesperson Kevin Gamble. “We appreciate Washburn Tech giving their students outstanding career training and the opportunity to use those skills to give back to the community and help others in need.”

Recycled Rides partners auto service and auto collision students with instructors and professional mentors in the community to refurbish vehicles, which are awarded to individuals and families in need. Local businesses and individuals also donate parts and supplies to get the vehicles on the road again. Lewis Collision Center, of Topeka, is t-shirt sponsor this spring.

This month, recipients will ride-away in one of the following refurbished vehicles: a 2014 Honda Accord given by a private donor through Lewis Collision Center; and a 2007 Honda Civic Hybrid, donated by Lewis Collision Center. In addition to the vehicle, recipients receive a bag of car-care products and the promise of a first oil change and check-up.

“Many of us take reliable transportation for granted,” said Clark Coco, dean, Washburn Tech. “Embracing this opportunity to change lives is a true testament to the students, mentors and instructors who have committed themselves to this worthwhile cause.”

Washburn Tech was the first college in the nation to participate in the National Auto Body Council’s Recycled Rides program. These vehicles are the 26th and 27th automobiles donated by Washburn Tech’s Recycled Rides program.
