Recycled Rides Celebrates Silver at Washburn Tech

11/29/18 11:11 am CST
"We are celebrating a silver anniversary, of sorts, as we put our 25th refurbished vehicle on the road"

Washburn Tech’s Recycled Rides program is cruising to another milestone. A ride-away
ceremony, gifting the program’s 25th vehicle, will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 4, in
Building K on the Washburn Tech campus at 5724 SW Huntoon St. Recycled Rides provides refurbished
vehicles to families who do not have reliable transportation.

“We are celebrating a silver anniversary, of sorts, as we put our 25th refurbished vehicle on the
road,” said Eric Showalter, auto collision technology instructor and Recycled Rides advisor. “As
the first college in the nation to participate in the National Auto Body Council’s (NABC) Recycled
Rides program, we are grateful to the hundreds of students, instructors, industry mentors and
volunteers who have given their time and talent over the years. They truly have provided the keys
to a brighter future for many in our community.”

The recipient of this ride-away will get the keys to a gold, 2008 Chrysler Town & Country. The
vehicle was donated by long-time Recycled Rides supporter, State Farm Insurance. In addition to the
vehicle, the recipient will receive a bag of car-care products and the promise of a first oil
change and check-up.

Recycled Rides partners auto service and auto collision students with instructors and professional
mentors in the community to refurbish vehicles, which are awarded to individuals and families in
need. Local businesses and individuals also donate parts and supplies to get the vehicles on the
road again. Laird Noller Collision Center in Topeka and Noller Body Shop in Lawrence are the
t-shirt sponsors this fall.

Nationwide, more than 1,000 vehicles have been donated through NABC’s Recycled Rides program since
the initiative began in 2007.
