The Washburn Law Clinic will offer a Veterans Legal Assistance Clinic for service members, veterans, and their family members on Saturday, February 10, 2018, from 10 a.m. to noon. Under the supervision of Washburn Law faculty, upper-level law students who have been certified as legal interns by the Kansas Supreme Court will provide free legal services relating to criminal records expungement and to the preparation of wills and advance directives for people who could not otherwise afford an attorney.

ESTATE PLANNING SERVICES: The Clinic will help service members, veterans, and their families plan for the future by preparing wills, powers of attorney for health care and finance, and living wills. The initial screening will occur at the Clinic on February 10, with the documents being prepared and executed afterward.

EXPUNGEMENT SERVICES: To help people access housing and employment, the Clinic will represent service members, veterans, and their family members in expungement matters in Shawnee County District Court and Topeka Municipal Court only. People seeking services should bring all paperwork relating to their arrest or court case, including the Complaint, Disposition Order, and Probation Order. Even if people do not have this paperwork, they can still seek assistance because criminal histories are accessible on court websites. The Clinic students will assist with preparing the expungement petitions and will appear at the expungement hearing with the veteran, under the supervision of the Washburn faculty. Information about what convictions are expungable can be found at: washburnlaw.edu/veteransclinic

ELIGIBILITY FOR SERVICES: People seeking services are asked to bring proof of military connection and must meet financial eligibility requirements. Please call 785.670.1191 with questions about eligibility. Kansas residents only. More information can be found at: washburnlaw.edu/veteransclinic
