"Q&A: Queers and Allies Discover the Law"

Washburn University School of Law will host “Q&A: Queers and Allies Discover the Law” on November 16 at the law school. This free event runs from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and is designed for high school and college students with an interest in learning about the current state of the law as it pertains to the LGBTQ community and a desire to explore law as a career option. Interested allies are also welcom to attend.

Sessions will cover the importance of diversity in the legal profession, legal aspects of family and custody, life as an LGBTQ lawyer, the legal landscape of transgender rights, and a student/alumni panel sharing personal law school experiences.

Discover Law is a campaign supported by the Law School Admission Council (LSAC), encouraging students to learn about the legal field and pathways into the profession. Diversity is a current LSAC focus, with emphasis on applicants who identify as LGBTQ, racially/ethnically diverse, and/or individuals with disabilities. LSAC resources for LGBTQ applicants include advice on whether to come out on a law school application and how to find an LGBTQ-friendly law school.

Washburn Law is committed to diversity and encourages people of all identities to apply for admission.

“We’re proud to host this event in partnership with the Law School Admission Council and I hope that LGBTQ students will feel right at home at Washburn Law,” said Carla Pratt, dean of the law school.

LSAC is a not-for-profit organization devoted to promoting quality, access, and equity in law and education worldwide by supporting individuals’ enrollment journeys and providing preeminent assessment, data, and technology services.
