Welcome Week at Washburn, Aug. 14-19

As students prepare to head back to class Washburn University celebrates with Welcome Week, Aug. 14-19, five days of activities to help students get ready for their first day of school on Aug. 18.

Thursday, Aug. 14

9 to 5 p.m. Move-In, Living Learning Center and Washburn Villages,
The Residential Living staff and hundreds of volunteers from across campus and the Topeka community help students move into their new on-campus home. PHOTO OPPORTUNITY: 9:30 to 10 a.m. Washburn President Jerry Farley will join the Move Crew at the Living Learning Center.

7:30 to 9:30 p.m., Rock the Rec, Student Recreation and Wellness Center,
Students will participate in the Fitness Frenzy (group exercise demonstration), knock-out basketball shooting contest, volleyball serve, rock climbing and other activities.


Friday, Aug. 15

8:30 to 10 a.m., WU Run/Walk, outside Mabee Library, Students will join Washburn community members interested in a 20-30 minute walk or run.

9 to 10 a.m., Meet and Greet, Mabee Library, Students will learn what is new at Mabee Library and discover a wealth of resources available to them.

10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Personalized Campus and Greek Life Tours, begin at Memorial Union.

11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Scorch on the Porch, Memorial Union lawn, (open to the public)Enjoy live entertainment, a $5 meal deal and Ichabod Shop sidewalk sale.

2 to 4 p.m., Adult Learner Session, Mabee Library
Join others who are starting college for the first time, returning to complete a degree or professional certificate, exploring interests for personal growth, and/or re-entering college life after military service for an information session and social gathering designed just for the adult learner.

3 to 4:30 p.m., Perfect Party, lower level, Memorial Union
Students are invited to join the perfect party, where they will meet some new friends, learn about campus and win some great prizes.

5:30 to 7:30 p.m., Adult Learner Session, Mabee Library
Join others who are starting college for the first time, returning to complete a degree or professional certificate, exploring interests for personal growth, and/or re-entering college life after military service for an information session and social gathering designed just for the adult learner.

8 to 9 p.m., Frangela Duo Comedy Show, Washburn Room, Memorial Union
A Los Angeles based comedy duo composed of Comedians Frances Callier and Angela V. Shelton.


Saturday, Aug. 16

10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Personalized Campus and Greek Life Tours, begin at Memorial Union.

7 to 10 p.m., Casino Night, Washburn Room, Memorial Union, Students will feel the excitement and glamour of the Las Vegas Strip for free at the 13th annual Campus Activities Board Casino Night.


Sunday, Aug. 17

6 to 7 p.m., Sundaes on Sunday, lobby, Living Learning Center, Students will eat ice cream sundaes courtesy of Residential Living.

7 to 9 p.m., Big Screen Event, Washburn Room, Memorial Union, Students will gather to enjoy one of this summer's blockbuster hits.


Monday, Aug. 18

3:30 to 4 p.m., Freshman Class Photo, porch, Memorial Union, The freshman class will gather for a class photo.

4 to 5 p.m., Convocation, White Concert Hall, Garvey Fine Arts Center, (open to the public) This event marks the beginning of the academic year, at which members of the Class of 2018 are welcomed to Washburn. Convocation also signals the start of the collegiate journey and ushers students into the community of scholars.

5 to 6 p.m., Campus Picnic, Washburn Room, Memorial Union, After Convocation, attendees will proceed to a campus picnic where members of Washburn’s executive staff will serve food.


Tuesday, Aug. 19

3:30 to 6:30 p.m. WU Fest, Memorial Union lawn, (open to the public) The Memorial Union lawn will be turned into Washburn’s own festival of fun. Enjoy games, good music, great food and representatives from a variety of Washburn's student organizations.

6:30 to 7 p.m. Traditions Night, Yager Stadium at Moore Bowl, (open to the public)Traditions Night will feature the Ichabod football team, Dancing Blues, cheer squad, marching band, coaches, fight song, cheers and the alma mater.
