Washburn PTKAW Chapter Holds Fall 17 Induction Ceremony

11/22/17 03:11 pm CST

The Phi Theta Kappa Alumni of Washburn University (PTKAW) welcomed 14 new members in an induction ceremony held on Sunday, November 19 at the Washburn University Memorial Union.  Phi Theta Kappa is the honor society for two-year college students.  The alumni chapter at Washburn is the only university-based Phi Theta Kappa Alumni chapter in the state of Kansas and one of fewer than two dozen nationally.

Washburn’s PTKAW chapter works to promote the university to current PTK members at community colleges and also to participate in volunteer projects, both on Washburn’s campus and at the members’ former two-year colleges.

James Barraclough, Washburn director of undergraduate initiatives and PTKAW advisor welcomed the new members and noted that the chapter has more than doubled in size in just a year.  He specifically thanked PTKAW’s first President Thaina Jensen, who is graduating in December 2017 as well as PTKAW’s founder Paul Vincent Flumen who earned both his bachelor and master’s degrees from Washburn.

Chrissy Baker, co-advisor of the PTK Kansas/Nebraska Region Alumni Association and Advisor for the PTK chapter at Butler Community College, delivered the keynote address. Baker – who had been involved with PTKAW since its formation -- highlighted the hallmarks of Phi Theta Kappa.  She noted that the PTK ideals of scholarship, leadership, service and fellowship can inspire students to achieve long after leaving the two-year college.
