Washburn Law Clinic Holding Veterans Legal Assistance Clinic

01/06/16 04:01 pm CST

The Washburn Law Clinic will be offering a dual Veterans Legal Assistance Clinic for veterans and other service-connected individuals on Saturday, February 13, 2016, from 9 a.m. to noon. One portion of the event focuses on preparing free wills, living wills, and durable powers of attorney. The other portion concentrates on providing representation for the expungement of convictions. All services are available for the duration of the event.

WILLS/POWER OF ATTORNEY CLINIC: The Clinic will be staffed by Washburn Law students who will be working pro bono under the close supervision of faculty. After the initial screening, upper-level Law Clinic interns, who have been certified by the Kansas Supreme Court to be legal interns, will meet with clients and complete the process. Veterans, service members, and their families are eligible for this service.

EXPUNGEMENT CLINIC: Only convictions in Shawnee County and Topeka Municipal courts will be addressed. All paperwork regarding conviction, including Complaint, Disposition Order, Probation Order, or case number, should be brought to the event. Veterans and service members are eligible for this service. A list of convictions that are expungable can be found at: washburnlaw.edu/veteransclinic

Law students, working pro bono under the close supervision of faculty, will assist with petitioning the court for an order of expungement of convictions and will appear at the expungement hearing with the veteran.

BOTH CLINICS: Veterans or service members are asked to bring proof of military connection and must meet financial eligibility requirements. Please call 785.670.1191 with questions about eligibility. Kansas residents only. More information can be found at: washburnlaw.edu/veteransclinic
