Washburn Tech Hosts Black History Month Event

02/24/17 11:02 am CST

Washburn Tech Student Government is marking Black History Month by hosting a special guest. Thomas Rosenblum, historian at the Brown v. Board of Education National Historic Site in Topeka, will speak to students, instructors and staff at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 28, in the Conference Center on the Washburn Tech campus at 5724 S.W. Huntoon St.

Rosenblum will talk about the history of the Brown case and why the NAACP wanted this case included in those litigated before the U.S. Supreme Court. He also will speak about Washburn University graduates who played important roles in the landmark case.

Rosenblum is an historian and cultural resource manager who has worked with private, state and federal museums and historic sites for 40 years. For the past 25 years, he has worked for the National Park Service and is currently serving at the Brown v. Board of Education National Historic Site.

The Topeka site, which opened in 2004, tells the story of the U.S. Supreme Court decision that ended legal segregation in public schools. It is located at 1515 S.E. Monroe St. and is open, free of charge, to the public.
