Washburn Tech to Host Fourth Annual Signing Day

02/10/17 09:02 am CST
"This event is designed to validate students as they continue their educational journey"

Washburn University Institute of Technology, (Washburn Tech) will ink a new class of recruits at National Technical Letter of Intent Signing Day from 9:30 until 11 a.m. on Thursday, February 16, 2017. New students, enrolled in either the current semester or next fall, will take part in a signing ceremony that is similar to an athletic signing in Washburn Tech’s Conference Center at 5724 S.W. Huntoon. Special guests will include Governor Sam Brownback; John Fox, director of dealer training, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles; and Matt Pavarnik, president and chief executive officer of the Greater Topeka Chamber of Commerce and GO Topeka.0

Washburn Tech’s event, now in its fourth year, mirrors the NCAA’s National Signing Day for athletes who commit to play sports in college. It is designed to honor students who are entering a technical field and to celebrate the dignity of work. Washburn Tech traditionally signs more than 400 students on Signing Day.

“This event is designed to validate students as they continue their educational journey,” said Clark Coco, dean, Washburn Tech. “Individuals who learn technical skills not only increase their own value but also increase the quality and value of the workforce. We believe in celebrating the dignity of work and signing day is one more way to do that.”

This year, nearly 50 colleges from around the country are participating. Coco says this united force is telling potential students that they are wanted, places are reserved for them and technical education will prepare them for strong careers.

Area business and community leaders along with several of Washburn Tech’s corporate partners will be in attendance to show support. It offers them a chance to meet their workforce of tomorrow.

Washburn Tech offers more than 30 career programs in one of five divisions: Construction, Health Care, Human Services, Technology and Transportation. Serving both high school and adult students, Washburn Tech’s graduation and placement rates are among the highest in the state.
