St. Francis Health Foundation Invests in Future Workforce

"At Washburn University and Washburn Tech, we take our responsibility to the community very seriously"

St. Francis Health Foundation continues its commitment to high-quality health care through a $330,000 gift to the Washburn University Foundation. The funding will be used to support the Regional Simulation Center on the Washburn University Institute of Technology (Washburn Tech) campus. The center was established last year with a federal grant, but that funding comes to an end in 2018.

The Regional Simulation Center is a multi-million dollar health care training lab that features four simulation bays that resemble an acute health care setting. It also features five high-fidelity CAE Health Care patient-simulation mannequins. The mannequins look and act like real patients and simulate patients ranging from neonatal care to geriatric patients. The simulators give future health care workers the chance to improve their skills without involving real patients.

“Washburn University and Washburn Tech are invaluable resources to this community - -Topeka, Shawnee County and Northeast Kansas,” said David Setchel, president, St. Francis Health. “The Regional Simulation Center will provide hands-on training for health care workers at the bedside, without fear of doing harm. The future patients of these trainees will be safer because of their Simulation Center experience. This is the primary benefit. The fact that we now have additional capability to expand the health care workforce, both in quantity and quality, is a bonus. St. Francis Health and the St. Francis Health Foundation are honored to be able to support this effort.”

“At Washburn University and Washburn Tech, we take our responsibility to the community very seriously,” said Jerry Farley, president of Washburn University.  “With this facility, we provide important training for our students but we also provide outstanding resources for continuing education for the entire region’s health care workers and serve as a training site for a number of health care organizations.”

The mission of the St. Francis Health Foundation is to secure new and grow existing capital for the benefit of St. Francis Health and the health needs of the communities it serves. Washburn Tech offers ten health care programs, from certified nurse aide (CNA) to practical nursing and surgical technology. Programs are open to both high school and adult students and can be completed on a full-time or part-time basis.
