Local Recycled Rides To Reach Milestone

"It is hard to believe that we will  have presented 20 individuals, families or organizations with the wheels they need to succeed"

Washburn Tech’s Recycled Rides program is hitting a new milestone by giving away its 19th and 20th vehicles to local folks in need. The Ride-Away ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, May 2, in Building K on the Washburn Tech campus at 5724 SW Huntoon St. A donation from long-time supporter State Farm Insurance also will be presented.

“It is hard to believe that we will  have presented 20 individuals, families or organizations with the wheels they need to succeed,” said Eric Showalter, auto collision instructor and Recycled Rides advisor, Washburn Tech. “Reaching this milestone, in less than five years, is a true testament to the students, mentors and instructors who have committed themselves to this worthwhile cause.”

Recycled Rides partners auto service and auto collision students with instructors and professional mentors in the community to refurbish vehicles, which are awarded to individuals and families in need. Local businesses and individuals also donate parts and supplies to get the vehicles on the road again. Lewis Collision Center, of Topeka, is t-shirt sponsor this spring.

In May, recipients will ride-away in one of the following refurbished vehicles: a 2011 Chevrolet Malibu donated by State Farm Insurance; and a 2014 Nissan Versa donated by Lewis Collision Center. In addition to the vehicle, recipients receive a bag of car-care products and the promise of a first oil change and check-up.

Washburn Tech was the first college in the nation to participate in the National Auto Body Council’s Recycled Rides program. More than 1,000 vehicles have been donated nationwide through the Recycled Rides program since its inception in 2007.
